A 18th century painting on wood after a Rubens painting “Adoration of the Magi”. Elegantly encased in a stunning black and gilt wooden baroque frame. This beautifully painted version of a well-known work by the old master illustrates a common studio practice, where the pursuit of originality was often not a priority.
The Adoration of the Magi (Latin: a Magis Adoratur) is the name traditionally given to a common subject in Christian art. It depicts the adoration of the baby Jesus by the Three Wise Men from the East. These wise men have followed the Star of Bethlehem to find the birthplace of Jesus. They are traditionally depicted as kings, especially in the Western world. They also bring gold, frankincense and myrrh, which they offer to Jesus.
