An exceptionally rare version of Josef Hoffmann's iconic Fledermaus chair. In the J.J. Kohn version from 1906 and in all reproductions after 1922, the chair features round spheres. These served as structural supports for the seat and armrests. In 1910, Thonet produced its own series of this chair, in which the sphere became an oval.
Only from 1922 onwards did these two forms merge, and the sphere shape became dominant.
The chair is sturdy and in good condition considering its age and bears the Thonet stamp on the underside. A piece of the original brand seal also remains.
The chair was likely reupholstered between 1940 and 1960.
Purchased approximately 10 years ago from the widow of a collector of primarily Bauhaus chairs.
Normal signs of use such as scratches/dents here and there in the wood.
