is an artist from the Netherlands. Marcel trained as an interior architect at the HKU in Utrecht. Marcel creates abstract expressionist paintings on canvas or paper using acrylic paint, but also applies forms of digital painting.
Statement:
'As a painter, you convey a story or use images to generate emotions. For me, paint, brushes, or a digital canvas are merely tools to evoke these emotions or stories and bring them to life. When I paint, my mind, as it were, guides these tools toward the final result. The moment I am in a painter’s ‘flow’, I slowly build up this emotion with the story, and project it onto the canvas or other medium. At that moment, my brain conveys something that is occupying my mind. Naturally, I start a painting with a specific thought in mind, but that can easily change during the course of the process into something unexpected that (strongly) takes over. I will always embrace that process and let it happen.
The final image I create will not be a precise figurative construction of this emotion or story, but rather an abstract representation of it. It will relate to something that occupies my mind at that moment, at that time, in that period. It resembles a dream translated into paint on canvas with brushes and other tools.
I am immensely fascinated by the similarity between macro- and micro-structures in nature and how these can also correspond to structures unconsciously created by humans. Here, too, humans are part of nature. If we, as humans, realize better that we are nature, I hope that we will also treat it with more respect as ‘fellow species’.
But beyond that, I would like these emotions to be expressed in cheerful and/or aesthetically beautiful paintings. I am a positive person, and the result should simply be enjoyed purely!
