Exceptional Octagonal Brass and Burl Veneer Mid-Century Coffee Table, 1970s. Ref.: CT1006
A highly distinctive and sculptural octagonal coffee or occasional table, dating from the 1970s, with an architectural stepped pedestal base and an exceptionally rich combination of materials and decorative detailing.
The table is constructed around a wooden framework, extensively clad in beautifully figured burl wood veneer, with contrasting polished brass bands and applied brass decoration. The naturally irregular, highly expressive grain of the burl creates a dramatic organic backdrop for the crisp geometric brass detailing.
The octagonal tabletop is framed by broad brass borders and centred by a striking stylised laurel wreath, set within a smaller octagonal brass frame. Repeated geometric borders continue around the tabletop, while the apron and stepped pedestal are embellished with rows of individually applied decorative brass studs, adding an almost jewellery-like quality to the construction.
The stepped octagonal base mirrors the geometry of the tabletop, giving the piece a strong architectural presence and a satisfying sense of visual symmetry. The combination of richly figured burl, warm brass and neoclassical ornamentation creates an intriguing dialogue between natural material, geometry and decorative craftsmanship.
A particularly unusual example of 1970s decorative design, combining elements of Neo-Classical, Mid-Century and Hollywood Regency aesthetics. Its bold proportions and richly detailed surfaces make it equally suitable as a coffee table, centre table or sculptural occasional table.
The table is in good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with its history. The brass retains an attractive aged character, while the burl veneer displays the natural variation and patina that contribute to the character of the piece.
