This secretary desk from the Empire period around 1820 is a representative example of early 19th-century craftsmanship. The piece of furniture is characterized by its clear lines and the use of noble materials, typical of this style.
The body of the secretary desk is made of solid wood and features a mahogany veneer, which achieves a deep luster through elaborate shellac hand-polishing. The furniture consists of two parts: a lower section with a slanted fall-front writing surface and two large drawers, and an upper section with three doors, the middle one of which is mirrored. Numerous small drawers and compartments inside offer organized storage space. Decorative brass fittings and applications, including key escutcheons, ring pulls, and foot caps, emphasize the classical aesthetic.
The piece of furniture is in a very well-maintained condition, suggesting careful restoration. The shellac polish has been newly applied, giving the wood surface an impressive depth and warmth. Shellac Petersburg style. The structure is stable and fully functional, making the secretary desk a durable heirloom.
As an elegant eye-catcher, this secretary desk seamlessly integrates into classically or eclectically furnished living and working spaces. It offers a stylish work surface and at the same time a representative piece of furniture that combines history and functionality.
