Painting by EllesBB:
The Beast and the Beauty; mixed media on canvas screen.
, an artist 'in' format.
She started painting later in life, initially with somewhat shaky steps, but soon found appreciation and recognition in her own circle and, after a few years, abroad as well. If you ask her to tell you something about herself or to write something down, she says: "I paint." That statement is telling about her work; it is what she does.
Throughout her life, she has been involved with design, decoration, and fashion. For instance, she worked for a number of well-known Dutch interior architects. She herself ran a shop in Deventer for a long time. First vintage and curiosities, and later American seconds combined with fashion. She always tried to beautify her surroundings. She can only find peace and tranquility in a harmonious environment. And if there isn't one, she will create it.
"Why did you start painting?" I asked. Her answer was wonderful. You would expect a whole story about education, art academy, and abroad. But she said: "I was with my sister in an art supply store and my younger sister bought a number of small canvases, and then I thought: let's give it a try."
Anyone can put something on a canvas, but you cannot immediately describe that as Art. That is up to the viewer. That environment expands because you are noticed. Elles paints large canvases with flair. You could say that she sculpts her canvases. She almost never uses a brush, but usually works with a palette knife or something else within reach. She usually works "wet-on-wet" because she is always in a hurry. She says she is in a "flow" and cannot stop. Most artists you meet say they see something in a vision. Elles cannot do that; she cannot visualize anything in her mind's eye. For her, it means that she sets to work with a vague feeling, and then the creation comes into being. And by that time, she sees what she has made anyway.
Many artists work within a specific theme or subject. Elles did that, but only to a certain extent. She has certain styles in which she creates similar paintings. But then she starts something completely different. Again, in a short or longer series.
Thanks to her website, not only could clients find her, but she is and continues to be regularly invited to exhibitions and galleries both at home and abroad.
Her work can now be admired in five Dutch and foreign books.
, a remarkable person with a remarkable talent.
