Elegant Kokeshi by Okura Koninobu. Okura Koninobu (小倉国信) is a well-known Japanese kokeshi maker. He is known as the only kokeshi maker active in Tokyo, where he is based with his workshop in Hachioji (West Tokyo). He comes from a family of carpenters (he is a fifth-generation carpenter) and was the first in his family to start making these wooden dolls decades ago. His creations deviate from the traditional Tohoku style. His kokeshi are often turned from a single piece of wood and are characterized by playful, dynamic elements such as loose or double rings/necklaces (called wa in Japanese, which symbolizes good luck or shiawase) around the narrow neck. He runs his craft together with his wife; he turns the dolls on the lathe, after which she decorates them with subtle and simple hand-painted nature motifs such as chrysanthemums, maple leaves, and wisteria. This kokeshi is turned from carefully selected light wood and features a hand-painted floral motif in pink and green tones, symbolizing softness and renewal. This technique, a true masterpiece of craftsmanship, testifies to the expertise of master woodturners from Japan. The face, painted with delicate and minimalist lines, exudes a typical Japanese serenity, a blend of simplicity and poetry. A red stamp on the base confirms its handmade origin. This is a charming decorative object, perfect for placing on a shelf or sideboard to bring a touch of Zen, poetry, and craftsmanship into your home. The height is 21 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks/dents present to varying degrees.
