Old Wooden Dewi Temple Figure with Original Gilding
Characterful hand-carved wooden sculpture of a seated Dewi figure, placed in a high niche-shaped backplate. What immediately stands out is the subtle forward-leaning posture of the figure, giving the sculpture a natural and almost living appearance. The hands rest modestly in her lap, while the body is softly and fluidly carved from the wood. It is precisely this slight asymmetry and tranquil posture that give the piece much more character than a standard decorative statue.
The backplate is also particularly elaborate. A slightly toothed, hand-carved edge runs around it, breaking the silhouette and adding depth to the object. This frame not only enhances the figure's form but also makes the sculpture visually stronger when displayed on a wall or in a niche. The back shows solid old wood with clear drying cracks, signs of use, and natural aging, fitting for a traditionally crafted object with genuine age.
Traces of old gilding are still visible in several places. Under magnification, this layer shows a grainy, broken structure, characteristic of old traditional gilding and not of modern paint or recent finishes. Together with the dark patina, the handwork in the face, ornamental motifs, and drapery, and the old handwritten label on the back, this creates an object with convincing authenticity and a strong story of its own.
According to the old label, the sculpture was once designated as "Dewi," meaning a goddess. Although such an old notation does not literally have to be read as hard identification, the name fits well with the piece's serene, devotional aura. The combination of its niche form, gilding, old wood, and hand-carved details makes this an atmospheric object with clear temple or ritual influence.
