The EA216 Soft Pad chair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames and introduced by Herman Miller in 1969, belongs to the celebrated Soft Pad Group. Developed as a refinement of the earlier Aluminum Group seating, the series introduced a set of upholstered cushions mounted within the lightweight aluminum frame, providing additional comfort while preserving the clarity and lightness of the original structure. The EA216 model is distinguished by its integrated arms and swiveling base, embodying the Eameses’ characteristic balance between technical precision and ergonomic design.
The Soft Pad Group reflects the Eames studio’s systematic approach to furniture design, in which shared structural components and production methods were used across multiple models.
