The Provençal santon is an everyday figure as much as a nativity scene figure. Among all the characters that populate the villages of Provence in December, the fisherman is one of the noblest. This one is seated on his wooden stool, pipe in mouth, black beret on his head, hands resting on his net. He is not in a hurry. He has all the time in the world. He is a man who knows the sea. This large format dressed santon measures approximately 20 cm in height. The body is made of molded and painted composition, with a face of remarkable expression: grey beard, pronounced wrinkles, a steady gaze. The bare hands and feet are carefully sculpted, with individualized fingers. The clothes are made of real fabric: a blue and white striped marinière shirt, a brown vest, a pink belt, green trousers. The fishing net is made of braided brown metal, with a wooden net shuttle. The stool is assembled from varnished wood. Each element is placed by hand. Provençal artisanal production, 1960s-1980s. Good general condition, stable colors, no missing elements. In a Provençal nativity scene, he finds his place by the water's edge, between the miller and the 'Ravi' (the ecstatic one).
