Douwe Elias was educated from 1974-1979 at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he was taught by Matthijs Röling, Jouke Wouda and Jentsje Popma. He has exhibited at Galerie Mokum (Amsterdam) since 1990 and annually at the PAN since 2009. In 2005 he commissioned a portrait of the then Queen Beatrix for the city hall in Leeuwarden. She posed for the painter.
He places his work directly on the canvas or panel, uses a robust, loose brushstroke and uses warm, intense colours. When the painting is somewhat dry, he uses finer brushes. An atmospheric image is created that depends on the mood of the painter. He has a technical style in which he makes optimal use of the use of light and space treatment.
Recurring subjects are: interiors (including cafes and restaurants), landscapes, cityscapes, nudes, portraits, still lifes and memories from his youth. Well-known are the paintings of children with a mental handicap, often with Down syndrome, who used to attend the school for special primary education with his father.
