This antique dark blue wooden chest from the 19th century with marine transport codes has a hinged lid and metal handles on the sides.

Both handles are present, but one is quite loose due to a crack in the wood. The paint is heavily weathered and flaked, with visible scratches and wear marks on the wood. The inside of the lid shows remnants of leather straps and the bottom is covered with a marble pattern. Light signs of use.
The navy blue paint: The classic, weather-resistant oil paint to protect the wood on board against salty seawater.
The letters DLVZT & BxW: The transport codes of the Department of Marine / Sea Transport Service with Batavia x Weltevreden (Dutch East Indies) as the final destination.
The leather holders: The interior was arranged for the personal, fragile equipment of an officer or traveling military doctor who went on board.
In 19th-century military logistics, larger chests (usually around 80 to 100 cm wide) were used for uniforms and heavy equipment. A width of only 64 cm and a depth of 27 cm means that this chest was specifically designed for fragile precision instruments, administration (logbooks), maps, or medical supplies. The gray paint on the inside was often used as an additional primer or protective layer against moisture and mold.
