He spent part of his childhood in Paris. After wandering through Europe for a number of years, he settled permanently in Amsterdam in 1975. After studying at the Rietveld Academy (1980-1985), he went on two study trips to China (1986 and 1987) where he studied Chinese calligraphy, among other things. This is followed by many trips to all parts of the world: Azid, America, Australia, everywhere he gains impressions, learns about other cultures, and writes about them, while painting, in his diary. In particular, the impressions he gains in China are always reflected in his work. For example, he uses Chinese newspapers and stamps in his art. Over the years, Dominique Chan's work has developed into a balanced composition of colours. In doing so, he uses all means to exploit its characteristic properties. As with the "constructivists", he uses color groups that appear in every autonomous work. His work radiates freedom. This appearance is caused by the use of color, bright and direct, and the apparently chaotic way in which the paint lies on the canvas. It is also striking that his work is often divided into different areas, with each area telling a different story. These subjects and colors then form the backdrop for the extras that Chan quickly and effectively puts down. The cheerfulness in Dominique Chan's work is appreciated worldwide. His work is regularly exhibited at home and abroad and is included in several large corporate collections.
