Galerie Weisbard (Hugo Borst):
On Thursday, September 22, the exhibition ‘Out of the Box’ by Harry de Winter (1949) opened at Galerie Weisbard. On display were dioramas in various sizes, prints, and life-size sculptures. De Winter’s art – inspired by Pop Art and Arte Povera – balances between collage and sculptures, but is in fact an assemblage; composite works using materials De Winter has found at flea markets, antique shops, or on the street (or beach). You could call his ideas, solidified in cabinets and cupboards, necessary and engaged, but De Winter also leaves room for casualness. The selections from his work made for this exhibition vary: they move between seriousness and anger, sometimes alternated with windward cheerfulness. One work makes you think, the other works directly on your funny bone.
