Delft blue has this rare ability to tell a story in a few strokes. On this plate, an entire Dutch landscape comes to life: a sower in traditional costume, with a wide-brimmed hat and a satchel at his waist, strides purposefully across flat, open land. Behind him, bare trees stand out against a cloudy sky, farms on the horizon, and a few seagulls in flight punctuate the silence of the landscape. The scene is carefully painted, in shades of cobalt blue and pale blue that give depth and atmosphere to the composition. The scalloped rim is adorned with large, classic Delft floral motifs—stylized chrysanthemums and swirling foliage—that elegantly frame the scene. A blue line highlights the inner contour of the rim, separating the border decoration from the central scene. With its 26 cm diameter, the plate has a beautiful presence. It is naturally intended for display, in a china cabinet, hung on a wall, or placed on a stand, where it brings that Nordic and timeless touch that Delft blue so skillfully creates.
