Product description
A wonderfully theatrical piece of German Art Deco.
Designed by Ilse Hohenreuther in 1929 for the Staatliche Majolika-Manufaktur Karlsruhe, this large oval Model 3213 bowl combines a vivid turquoise glaze with a white craquelé interior and two extraordinary reclining female figures stretched languidly along its sides.
The women almost become part of the architecture of the vessel: elongated limbs, stylised faces and flowing ribbons turning a functional bowl into a miniature sculptural stage.
Model 3213 has an especially interesting place in Hohenreuther’s career. The Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe holds the identical model and documents it as one of her first independent commissions, created when she was only eighteen.
Female figures would subsequently become the central motif of her work.
Hohenreuther’s ceramics are increasingly being rediscovered within the history of women designers working in Germany between the wars, including her inclusion in the 2023 museum exhibition Tonangebend: Starke Frauen und ihre Kunst 1918–1945.
Germany, c. 1930–1933.
Model 3213.
Glazed majolica / earthenware.
Very good vintage condition with original craquelure. One small restored loss to the corner of a foot underneath the bowl; unobtrusive when displayed. No other chips, cracks or restorations identified.
A rare combination of serious ceramic history and irresistible decorative presence.
Signs of wear: restoration on one foot, see photos
