Product description
De winnaar (The Victor) – Pieter het Hart, The Netherlands, 1977. Mixed media on board. (probable hardboard panel). Signed and dated lower right: “p t H 77”. Dutch School, 20th century. This powerful abstract-figurative composition by Pieter het Hart (1925–1987) exemplifies the mature phase of the artist’s development in the 1970s, when his work evolved from darker, figurative expressions toward more liberated, symbolic and abstract constructions.Born in 1925 in IJmuiden into a fishing family, Het Hart developed his artistic practice alongside a technical profession. From the 1950s onward, he pursued formal art education and gradually established himself as a registered BKR artist, educator, and gallery owner in IJmuiden. His oeuvre spans figurative scenes, still lifes, harbour views, and increasingly abstract compositions, marked by a distinctive visual language of strong contours and expressive form.De winnaar presents a dense, symbolic visual field in which fragmented figures emerge through thick, rounded black contour lines. The composition oscillates between abstraction and figuration: animal forms (including equine and canine shapes), anthropomorphic figures, and hybrid creatures appear layered within a dynamic structure. A dominant central figure, positioned atop an elephant-like form, reinforces the thematic suggestion of triumph, power, and symbolic ascension. The chromatic palette is restrained yet expressive: deep blacks structure the composition, while a diffused background of yellowed ground tones is interwoven with green, orange, and brown hues, creating a softened atmospheric field behind the bold linear framework. The painterly surface and material character suggest a mixed-media technique, likely combining oil-based and synthetic binders on a hardboard support, consistent with studio practices of the period.Signed and dated “p t H 77”, the work reflects Het Hart’s mature visual language: rhythmic line work, symbolic figuration, and a narrative abstraction that resists literal interpretation while maintaining strong associative imagery. The composition embodies both personal mythology and broader post-war European abstract-figurative traditions.De winnaar stands as a representative example of post-war Dutch abstract figuration, combining expressive structure, symbolic narrative, and formal autonomy into a visually commanding and conceptually layered work.
