Product description
Beautiful vintage sideboard model ‘DB02’, designed by Cees Braakman and produced by Pastoe in the 1950s. The sideboard is part of Pastoe's Berkenserie (Birch Series) and belongs to Braakman's early work. A rare piece of Dutch design that rarely appears on the market.
This piece comes from the estate of the first owners and has always remained within the same family. It was purchased at the time from the Nanninga company, where the family bought several design furniture pieces. Even the original invoice from that period has been preserved, on which the sideboard is listed.
The sideboard is in exceptionally well-preserved, original condition. Because it has been carefully treated over the years, it was decided to leave the furniture as untouched as possible. The original finish and the character of the birch wood have been preserved. Only one shelf has been re-manufactured according to the original example. The limited signs of wear are consistent with its age and contribute to its authentic character.
The sideboard has a spacious and surprisingly practical interior. Behind the left double door is a wide cabinet with a shelf. The right double door provides access to a smaller compartment with multiple shelves and four small drawers, executed according to Braakman's characteristic dust-free construction. A well-thought-out layout neatly integrated into the design.
The iconic loop legs form a playful detail within the otherwise sober design and give the sideboard a light, airy appearance. Precisely this combination of simplicity and playfulness is characteristic of the Berkenserie and beautifully shows how Braakman, within post-war Dutch modernism, gave space to something optimistic and idiosyncratic. Sober yet optimistic, fitting for the period in which the series originated.
