Product description
This Danish teak-veneered lowboard from the 1960s represents Scandinavian design at its most refined. The slender silhouette resting on four tapered legs radiates the calm equilibrium that became synonymous with Danish modernism. With its generous length and low horizontal profile, the piece embodies the mid-century modern aesthetic that continues to influence contemporary interiors.
The construction centres on a rectangular cabinet housing three spacious drawers, their fronts forming an almost uninterrupted surface. In place of conventional handles, the design incorporates recessed finger pulls carved into the upper edge of each drawer front. This approach eliminates protruding hardware that would otherwise interrupt the minimalist composition, allowing the warm teak veneer to flow across the façade without visual breaks. The solid wood legs are finished with oil, lending them a natural, satiny texture that complements the cabinet's rich tones.
The 1960s marked the golden age of Danish furniture design, when Scandinavian makers earned worldwide acclaim by combining artisanal craftsmanship with the democratic ideal of bringing good design into everyday homes. Low horizontal storage pieces emerged as symbols of this new approach to living spaces, replacing heavy sideboards and dressers with forms that felt open and light.
At two hundred centimetres wide, the lowboard serves beautifully as a television console in a generous living room or as an elegant hallway credenza. The three drawers accommodate documents, media accessories and everyday sundries, while the expansive top provides ample surface for displaying decorative objects or audio equipment.
The piece remains in good condition, showing signs of use consistent with its age. The surfaces display minor scratches and small nicks, while localised imperfections have been professionally filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
