Product description
Danish coffee table from the 1970s, veneered in rosewood. This piece represents the mature phase of Scandinavian modernism, when designers had perfected the art of combining visual lightness with structural integrity. The deep, rich tone of rosewood lends the table an understated elegance that needs no embellishment.
The construction relies on slender solid wood legs that taper downward in the classic Scandinavian manner. A system of stretchers connects them into a rigid frame — a solution typical of Danish furniture making, where stability came from considered geometry rather than bulky components. The rectangular top rests on this framework, creating a distinct shadow line between surface and structure. The proportions are carefully balanced: the extended horizontal plane of the top plays against the vertical rhythm of legs and crossbars.
Danish design of the 1970s built upon decades of refinement, when manufacturers had established standards for export-quality furniture that reached markets from America to Japan. Rosewood was particularly prized during this period — its dark colouring and pronounced grain patterns appealed to international tastes. The coffee table served as a focal point in Danish living rooms, around which seating was arranged to encourage conversation.
This coffee table works as a centrepiece for a living area. The top accommodates books, cups and decorative objects, while the open base keeps the visual weight minimal.
The table is in good condition. Minor scratches and small chips are visible from years of use. Small losses have been filled during conservation. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
