Danish pendant lamp from the 1960s, representing the golden era of Scandinavian lighting design. The distinctive layered shade construction gives it a bold, architectural presence that has lost none of its relevance over the decades.
The design builds upon overlapping conical tiers that create a dynamic, multi-level form. The uppermost element flares gently outward, while smaller rings descend progressively toward the light source. This construction does more than shape an interesting silhouette — it controls how light disperses through the space, directing illumination downward while shielding eyes from direct glare. The brown metal finish emphasises the geometric precision of the design.
Danish lighting design of the 1960s developed in the shadow of celebrated names, yet it was anonymous designers working for smaller manufacturers who built the foundation of the Scandinavian layered lamp tradition. They experimented with shade form as a tool for shaping light, treating the lamp not merely as a light source but as an element defining interior atmosphere. Their work combined functionality with sculptural expression, creating accessible alternatives to high-end designs.
