This cylindrical metal box, adorned with a black Toile de Jouy style printed design on a cream background, is one of those discreet pieces that catch the eye with their unexpected refinement. Around its body, the scenes unfold continuously. An imposing ox dominates an open landscape, a sheep grazes in the shade of a tree, and figures busy themselves near a building resembling an old farmhouse. The finely drawn bamboos and foliage recall the influence of 18th-century printed fabrics, where the Orient and the French countryside mingled in a single composition. The matching domed lid extends the design with the same graphic precision. The lines are fine, the scenes well-constructed, and the cream background is lightly patinated by time.
