The charming "Yukata de Hana" Kokeshi doll by Kojo Tanaka.
"Yukata de Hana" (浴衣で花) is best translated as "Flower in Yukata" or "Flowers in a summer kimono."
It instantly evokes the nostalgic image of a young girl enjoying a balmy Japanese summer evening, dressed in her favorite summer outfit.
The name refers to the visual design of the doll itself; the wooden body is often adorned with beautifully carved or painted floral patterns (such as camellias or plum blossoms), effectively making the doll a "flower in a yukata."
Kojo Tanaka (田中晃常 or 田中幸丈) is a respected Japanese artisan and kokeshi-shi (kokeshi maker). He is renowned for his significant contributions to the Sōsaku Kokeshi (creative kokeshi) movement.
Unlike traditional (Dento) kokeshi, which adhere to strict, region-specific rules, the creative dolls that emerged after World War II offered artists like Tanaka the freedom to explore unique shapes, themes, and woodworking techniques.
Tanaka hailed from—and was active in—Gunma Prefecture, the birthplace of modern creative kokeshi art in Japan.
He ran the Kōjō Kokeshi Workshop (晃常こけし工房). Doll making began as a family enterprise when his parents established a kokeshi workshop in 1968 under the name Tanaka Gangu (Tanaka Toys). Kojo later took the helm and transformed the studio into the renowned creative workshop it is today.
Tanaka is an award-winning master craftsman. He won prizes at events including the prestigious All Japan Kokeshi Competition, confirming his status as a master craftsman within the national art community.
The kokeshi comes with its original box.
It stands 14 cm tall; please refer to the photos for its condition.
Please note: These items are not new, so some degree of scratching, discoloration, and/or minor cracks or dents is to be expected.
