A charming Ayamadori kokeshi doll by Kojo Tanaka.
Ayamadori (雨やどり) translates to "taking shelter from the rain." Crafted in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, the figurine is distinguished by its characteristic tilted head, a vibrant red kimono adorned with floral patterns, and the folded paper parasol (wagasa) she holds.
Kojo Tanaka (田中晃常 or 田中幸丈) is a respected Japanese artisan and kokeshi-shi (kokeshi maker), known for his significant contributions to the Sōsaku Kokeshi (creative kokeshi) movement.
Unlike traditional (Dentō) kokeshi, which adhere to strict, region-specific rules, the creative dolls that emerged after World War II offered artists like Tanaka the freedom to explore unique shapes, themes, and woodworking techniques.
Tanaka hailed from and was active in Gunma Prefecture, the birthplace of modern creative kokeshi art in Japan.
He ran the Kōjō Kokeshi Workshop (晃常こけし工房). Doll-making began as a family enterprise when his parents established a workshop in 1968 under the name Tanaka Gangu (Tanaka Toys). Kojo later took the helm and transformed the studio into the renowned creative workshop it is today.
Tanaka is an award-winning master craftsman. He won prizes at the prestigious All Japan Kokeshi Competition, among others, cementing his status as a top artisan within the national art community.
This kokeshi comes with its original box. The height is 13 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be some degree of scratching, discoloration, and/or small cracks or dents.
