Product description
A pair of vintage German studio pottery vases from the 1970s, featuring intricate crystalline glazes in contrasting warm and cool colours. Walter Gebauer’s tall brown vase displays honey-toned, radiating crystal formations, while Gudrun and Ralf Unterstab’s rounded grey-blue vase reveals delicate, frost-like patterns. Their contrasting silhouettes and glossy surfaces make this ceramic vase duo a distinctive example of German art pottery. Dimensions: Walter Gebauer vase: H 18 cm, Dia. 8 cm Gudrun & Ralf Unterstab vase: H 10 cm, Dia. 13 cm Material: ceramics, glossy crystalline glazes Designer: Walter Gebauer; Gudrun & Ralf Unterstab Color: Tall vase: brown and honey smaller vase: grey and blue Condition: Very good vintage condition; no visible damage, cracks or scratches; no repairs or restorations. Era: 1970s Origin: Germany Remarks: Set of two studio pottery vases by different makers. Walter Gebauer vase is a studio prototype. An appealing pairing for collectors of crystalline glaze ceramics and vintage German pottery, with added interest through Gebauer’s contribution to glaze development. Display on a living room sideboard, console or open shelf, where directional light reveals the crystal patterns. Both pieces complement mid-century modern interiors, natural wood and restrained contemporary furnishings. Walter Gebauer (1907–1989) was a German master potter based in Bürgel, Thuringia, and an influential figure in East German studio ceramics. Known for his research into crystalline glazes, he combined simple vessel forms with richly patterned surfaces. His legacy is recognised through the annual Walter Gebauer Ceramics Prize in Bürgel. Gudrun and Ralf Unterstab ran Kunsttöpferei Unterstab (KTU), a studio pottery workshop in Langenhessen, Saxony, from the 1960s. Gudrun trained with her father, potter Albert Kießling, while Ralf initially worked in architecture before turning to ceramics. Together, they produced decorative vessels within the East German studio pottery tradition. General Information International shipping available.
