Candle holder “Corona”, Uno Westerberg for Pukeberg, 70s – Sweden
Original “Corona” (“Krona”) candle holder, designed by Uno Westerberg for the Swedish glassworks Pukeberg during the 1970s. From its almond-shaped foot, the base emerges, separating into three arms, each with a support for a candle. Between them, two pieces hang from the two hollows which, together, give the design its name. It refers to its shape reminiscent of a royal crown, due to its rounded and elevated forms. It is made of transparent pressed glass, a technique widely used at the time. As is usual in his designs, it incorporates a textured or modeled surface that plays with light and creates natural and organic effects. It is not just a decorative piece, but an icon of Swedish design history, highly sought after by collectors.
Uno Westerberg (1914‑1985)
Uno Westerberg was a Swedish designer closely associated with Pukebergs Glasbruk from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. He studied interior architecture but primarily developed his career in glass design, both for lighting and for Decorative Objects. He began his career very young, at the Arvid Böhlmarks lamp factory in Stockholm. That factory acquired Pukeberg, moving all lighting production to the Pukeberg glass workshop itself in 1964, where Westerberg designed lamps for public spaces, churches, and homes.
His works have even been exhibited at MoMA in New York, thanks to a table lamp design using the overlay technique (“overfångsteknik”). In the 1970s, he took over the artistic direction of Pukeberg. He led prominent series such as Stratos, Ulla, and Korall, which boosted the production of decorative glass in the workshop. In addition to lamps, he created ornamental glass objects: bowls and vases from the Spectra series, very successful in export, especially to the USA.
Pukeberg Glasbruk, the historic Swedish glassworks
Pukeberg is one of Sweden's oldest and most renowned glassworks, founded in 1871 in the town of Nybro, in the Småland region, known as the Swedish “Kingdom of Crystal” (Glasriket). For over a century, it was recognized for producing both artistic glass and high-quality utilitarian glass. It stood out for its innovation in glass blowing, pressing, and molding techniques. It was home to renowned Swedish designers, such as Uno Westerberg, Eva Englund, and Signe Persson-Melin, who contributed unique styles to its catalog. It experienced its creative peak between the 1950s and 1970s, producing a large number of pieces, both decorative and utilitarian, for export. Although industrial production has ceased, the original site in Nybro now houses the Pukeberg Design Center: a creative and educational center that includes workshops, design studios, a gallery, and spaces for artists. It is also part of the Glasriket (Kingdom of Crystal) tourist circuit.
