Product description
Navigation instrument known as a 'reduction compass' (proportional caliper), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Origin: This instrument exhibits technical and stylistic characteristics identical to those of tools produced by Atkinson Bros. (Sheffield), known for their complete navigation kits (sextants and associated tools) during this period. It is highly probable that this example comes from the same manufacturer or a contemporary Sheffield workshop (see attached photo of the reference example). Instrument characteristics: Material: Solid brass body. Graduations: The instrument features four engraved calculation scales: LINES, CIRCLES, PLANES, and SOLIDS. The numbers and graduations are precisely engraved on both sides of the arms. Mechanics: The arms are assembled via a central screw allowing smooth adjustment of the opening. Marking: The piece bears the number '21' engraved twice on the fixed sections of the arms, indicating manual adjustment in the workshop. Dimensions: Total length of 14.5 cm. Case characteristics: Material: Burr wood case, with an interior compartment conforming to the shape of the tool. The compass will be wrapped in a cover before being placed in the box. Ornamentation: The lid is inlaid with a brass piece representing a ship's anchor. The small blue pouch is modern; it is used to protect the compass. Dimensions and weight of the empty case: 18x5x3.5 cm - 169 grams The object is in good condition, with a natural brass patina.
