Regency Manuscript - Personal Poetic Album of Mary Bramston (1814) Prov. Oakley Hall (Hampshire) - Intimate Circle and Neighbor of Jane Austen. Important handwritten poetic collection (Commonplace Book) composed by Mary Bramston (née Chute) and other members of her entourage (notably her husband Wither Bramston) signed and dated 1814, extended until approximately 1821. Quarto, period binding in full red/brown morocco with gilt ornaments on the covers. Approximately 100 handwritten pages in elegant and perfectly legible cursive script. Approximately 50 blank pages. The paper is watermarked and dated 1812. Very good condition with some minimal foxing. The cover may show some minimal imperfections visible in the photos. 1. Exceptional Provenance - The Intimate Circle of Oakley Hall The album is signed by Mary Bramston (1760-1821), wife of Wither Bramston, owner of the Oakley Hall estate in Hampshire. The Bramstons and Withers were among the closest friends and immediate neighbors of the Austen family in Steventon. Mary Bramston is a recurring figure in Jane Austen's correspondence with her sister Cassandra (notably cited in the famous letter no. 78 of January 1813) and others. 2. Direct Testimony of the Regency Era (1814-1820) Begun in 1814 - the year Mansfield Park was published - the notebook covers the entirety of the late Regency era. It contains immediate literary reactions to major events in British history: The defeat of Napoleon (1815): Several poems dedicated to the Battle of Waterloo (Lines Written on the Field of Waterloo, The Waterloo Waltz), the death of Princess Charlotte The end of a reign (1820): A curious numerological game on the death of King George III (Georgius Ter. Obiit, 1820). And others!!! 3. Content: Major Works and Unpublished Family Pieces The notebook brings together a rich poetic corpus: Contemporary pieces by leading authors: Handwritten copies of poems by Lord Byron (On the Death of Sir Peter Parker, 1814), Sir Walter Scott and dramatic prologues by Joanna Baillie... Family and private compositions (probably unpublished): Verses and tales signed directly by members of the close family circle, notably "Domestic Tales in Verse by W. Bramston" (The Linnets a True Tale) and poems signed "G. C. Wither" as well as compositions by close friends. A remarkable, documented, and unpublished archival piece, offering a direct immersion into the cultural universe of Jane Austen's world. There is undoubtedly much to discover about this work.
