Product description
The French artist Colette Pettier created this intriguing graphic work titled 'Le secret' in 1966. This etching-aquatint displays an abstract, organic composition with a figure hidden behind branches, giving the work a mysterious and layered appearance. The work depicts a stylized tree with a fine, intricate network of branches against a deep blue background. Within her broader oeuvre, this specific artwork carries a layered meaning: The tree as guardian and symbol: In art history and mythology—from which Pettier drew much inspiration—the tree symbolizes life, connection, and deep-rooted wisdom. By allowing the branches to intertwine in such a complex and intricate way, she creates a visual labyrinth. The "secret" (le secret) is intertwined within nature itself; it is impenetrable to the naked eye. The mystery of the night: The deep blue background evokes the atmosphere of twilight or night. This aligns seamlessly with her fascination with surrealism and dreamscapes. The night is the time when secrets are kept and the subconscious is given free rein. The artwork was created using a combination of etching, aquatint, and sugar aquatint on paper. The etching measures 23.7 by 16.7 centimeters and is presented framed. The work is numbered 23/30 and hand-signed by the artist. The color scheme combines earthy brown and ochre tones with deep black and subtle red accents. On the back is a gallery label confirming the provenance and technique. Although the etching was formally created in 1966, the label states the year 1979. This is likely the year in which this etching was framed. The work is in good condition, commensurate with its age and material. The paper and framing display characteristic features of an authentic vintage artwork. Some paint has disappeared from the original, slender black wooden frame in the upper right corner. See the first two photos. This graphic work fits perfectly into a modern or eclectic interior. It adds a touch of French art history to a study, hallway, or living space and combines well with both classic and contemporary elements.
