This coffee table was conceived within the close collaboration between Dom Hans van der Laan and the Dutch architect Jan de Jong during the postwar reconstruction period in the Netherlands. Executed by Jan de Jong in the 1960s, the design reflects Van der Laan’s theoretical pursuit of harmonic proportion, translated into furniture through rigorous geometry, clarity of structure, and a deliberate rejection of ornament.
The table’s sober materiality and rhythmic construction align with the principles of the Bossche School, an architectural movement characterized by spiritual restraint, mathematical proportion, and monastic austerity. While individual authorship within this collaboration is difficult to isolate, the piece embodies Van der Laan’s spatial philosophy as realized by De Jong’s architectural discipline. The involvement of artist Wim van Hoof in developing complementary color schemes further situates the table within a broader interdisciplinary dialogue of postwar Dutch design.
