MID-CENTURY MODERN COCOON TABLE LAMP BY FRIEDEL WAUER FOR GOLDKANT LEUCHTEN (GERMANY, 1960s–1970s)
This elegant mid-century modern table lamp is a striking design by Friedel Wauer for the renowned German lighting company Goldkant Leuchten. Wauer—credited by FLOS for pioneering the technique of spraying plastic onto metal frames—designed this distinctive cocoon lampshade, inspired by the self-wrapping behavior of silkworms. The result is an organic, sculptural form that diffuses a warm, ambient light.
The silky, leatherette-like cocoon shade rests on a streamlined chrome plastic base, reflecting influences from mid-century modern, Atomic Age, and industrial design. Functional and elegant, this lamp makes a bold yet tasteful statement in any interior.
The original Goldkant and model label is still present on the base. Please refer to the photos for details on the condition.
Goldkant Leuchten, founded in 1946, became known for their innovative cocoon lamps, winning two iF Design Awards in 1974. The company closed its doors in 1994, making their designs increasingly rare and collectible.
In very good vintage condition, with light wear to the shade, base, and underside consistent with age.
