At the turn of the 20th century, the kitchens of grand houses were adorned with sets of earthenware pots, intended to store daily provisions while also contributing to the decor. This flour pot is a fine example of this, with its elegant deep cobalt blue background highlighting a delicate floral decoration painted in shades of pink, white, and gold. The influence of Japonism, very fashionable at that time, can be seen in the delicate floral branches, the light lines of the design, and the gilded highlights that bring light and refinement to the piece. The inscription 'Farine' (Flour), rendered in elegant calligraphy, recalls the primary purpose of this piece while reinforcing its decorative charm. The original lid, topped with its matching finial, harmoniously completes the ensemble. The fully enameled interior once allowed for flour to be kept safe from moisture. Placed on a kitchen dresser or a wooden shelf, this pot immediately brings that touch of deep blue and gilding that characterized the elegant interiors of the Belle Époque. The piece shows enamel chips on the rim of the lid and at the base of the pot, as well as partial wear to the gilding, consistent with antique domestic use.
