Some objects defy simple categorization. This ceramic piece is one of them. Halfway between a desk object and a decorative element, it harks back to an era when even everyday accessories were carefully considered. Its deep, luminous cobalt blue is accentuated by gilding that structures the piece without weighing it down. It features two distinct compartments, separated by a gilded divider. Two small rings on the front edge are designed to hold nibs or pens/pencils. This object was conceived for the desk, for writing, for the slow gesture of one who takes the time to set down their pen before replying. Such items were still manufactured in the 1950s to 1970s, in French or Italian workshops, for offices where writing was done by hand. Where inkwells were commonplace. Where the desk was a space for reflection, not just work. These objects have almost disappeared. Replaced by plastic, then by screens. This one has survived. Excellent condition. Brilliant enamel, gilding well-preserved. There are a few visible but discreet traces of wear under the base, which do not detract from the piece's integrity or character. Dimensions approximately 9 cm wide.
