Oscar-Claude Monet (Paris, November 14, 1840 – Giverny, December 5, 1926) was a French Impressionist painter.
Monet moved with his family to Le Havre when he was about five years old. He fulfilled his military service in Algeria in 1861-1862, which may have influenced his later choice to paint primarily landscapes.
Monet began painting with Charles Gleyre in Paris. In 1867, he lived with Renoir at Frédéric Bazille's. In the years that followed, he shared a studio in Paris with Bazille. From probably 1865, Monet had a relationship with Camille Doncieux. In 1867, their first son, Jean, was born in Paris. The couple married in the summer of 1870. They spent their honeymoon in Trouville, but due to the war between France and Prussia, they fled to London. Via the Netherlands, where they spent four months in Zaandam and a short stay in Amsterdam, they returned to France to settle in Argenteuil in 1871. This place was easily accessible from the Saint-Lazare station in Paris, which Monet captured in various paintings. During this period, Monet briefly became prosperous because his paintings sold well.
Monet also painted extensively outside of France. In the Netherlands, he created several works, particularly in the Zaan region, with subjects including windmills and typical Zaan houses. Also well-known is his painting of the De Vlinder windmill near Rijnsburg (1886), which hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. As is Flower Fields near Leiden with the De Hoop Doet Leven windmill (1886), which is part of the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. He also created paintings in Amsterdam, for example, The Montelbaan Tower, Amsterdam (circa 1874). Some of these works are exhibited in the Van Gogh Museum.
Monet became known in the Netherlands through the works he painted during his stays in Zaandam (1871), Amsterdam (1874), The Hague, and the Bulb Region (both in 1886).
