Designed by Christian Dell for Kaiser Leuchten around 1951, the Model 6787 is one of the most sculptural table lamps of the celebrated Kaiser Idell range. Its broad, almost floating black reflector, sweeping brass arm and circular base create a remarkably elegant composition, combining technical precision with the organic lightness characteristic of post-war modernism. The large shade can be adjusted to direct the light, while the small perforations along its upper surface form a subtle graphic detail. Contemporary examples document the model with a shade diameter of approximately 38 cm. Christian Dell (1893–1974) was one of the key figures connecting the Bauhaus with German industrial design. Trained as a silversmith, he served as Werkmeister of the metal workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1922 to 1925, working alongside figures including László Moholy-Nagy and teaching designers such as Marianne Brandt and Wilhelm Wagenfeld. From 1926 he headed the metal workshop at the Frankfurt Art School before developing numerous lighting designs for industrial production. Dell’s collaboration with Gebrüder Kaiser & Co. resulted in the Kaiser Idell series, first documented in the company’s catalogues during the 1930s. The name Idell combines the German word Idee with Dell’s surname. The series translated the functional principles of the Bauhaus into durable, serially manufactured lighting and became one of the defining expressions of German modernist lamp design. The Model 6787 represents a particularly elegant post-war development of this design language. Unlike Dell’s more strictly industrial desk lamps of the 1930s, its generously proportioned, flattened shade and curved brass support give the lamp an almost architectural and sculptural presence while maintaining complete functional clarity. The contrast between black lacquered metal and warm brass further emphasizes its refined 1950s character. The present example is preserved in very good vintage condition, with only discreet age-related traces consistent with its history. Its strong proportions, unusually large reflector and characteristic combination of black lacquer and brass make the 6787 a highly distinctive and collectible example of German post-war modernism with direct roots in the Bauhaus tradition.
