Chris Derksen (1928-2018)
Chris Derksen was a versatile artist. In addition to being a sculptor and painter, he was also a graphic artist. Although Chris Derksen may be primarily known as a sculptor, he enjoyed painting. Even when he still owned his construction company, he was already taking drawing lessons in the evenings. In the 1990s, after attending the art academy in Turnhout, he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Arendonk to further hone his skills in drawing, painting, and graphic techniques. He depicts all his subjects in a rather abstract manner. His use of color was distinctive: warm earth tones reminiscent of iron. The similarities between the abstract paintings and the sculptures are striking: here too we find architectural forms (curves and angles), but equally so organic forms.
