Sculpture of a Dignitary with a Long Beard - Bamboo Root - China - 20th Century - Rare
This anthropomorphic sculpture is a remarkable example of the art of working with bamboo rhizome (root). The artisan skillfully utilized the plant's natural, fibrous structure to create a figure with exuberant facial hair, a classic theme in Asian art.
The piece depicts the face of a smiling old man, likely a figure from Chinese folk mythology or a Taoist immortal, whose eyebrows and monumental beard are formed from the preserved and worked natural rootlets. The smooth, polished top of the head corresponds to the base of the bamboo culm.
The reverse of the piece is hollowed out, revealing the characteristic segmented structure of bamboo, confirming the authenticity of the material.
Condition
The object is in good overall condition. A small chip or natural crack is visible on the top of the skull, which is common with this organic material subject to humidity fluctuations. The patina is original, with a beautiful depth of honey-brown tones.
