A dragon and phoenix are depicted in relief around the body, interspersed with cloud motifs and the Chinese shou symbol for longevity. The openwork lid is composed of lotus and tendril motifs and is crowned by a Buddhist lion, also known as a foo dog, with a ball between its front paws. Xuande Style Mark On the underside is a four-character Xuande-type mark. Such marks were used for centuries on later Chinese incense burners as an archaistic reference to famous Ming bronzes. Therefore, the mark is described here as a style mark and not as a dating to the Xuande period. Surface and Use The brass-rich copper alloy has a warm golden-brown surface with localized blue-green copper oxidation, especially around the legs, handles, and under the lid. Residue from incense use is visible in the interior. The combination of thin casting, decorative finish, and production is consistent with Chinese work from the second half of the 20th century. Condition Good used condition with signs of age and use, localized copper oxidation, and dark residues on the inside. Lid, finial, handles, and legs are present.
