This Chinese elm sideboard, originating from Imperial China and dating to around 1900, reflects a domestic storage typology typical of the late Qing period. Its elongated, low structure with double front doors and a compartmented interior illustrates the practical use of such pieces in traditional homes, where they functioned as auxiliary cabinets. Its formal presence is closely aligned with the world of antique Chinese furniture, where structural simplicity meets strong material expression.
The piece appears to be crafted in solid elm wood, consistent with the visible grain, tonal variation and density of the material. The construction follows traditional joinery techniques, with a sturdy frame raised on straight legs.
