Chao Chung-Hsiang (趙春翔, 1910–1991) – Original Ink & Watercolor Painting, Signed and Dedicated Artwork
A superb original painting by Chao Chung-Hsiang (趙春翔, 1910–1991), a major figure in modern Chinese art and a pioneer in blending Eastern ink tradition with Western modernist movements.
Executed in ink and watercolor on rice paper, the composition depicts a poetic scene: a woman guiding her horse against the wind amid swirling leaves. The brushwork conveys vitality, rhythm, and spirituality — hallmarks of Chao’s mature style.
In the upper right area, the artist added a red handwritten inscription in seal script style (篆書, zhuànshū), one of the most ancient and artistic forms of Chinese calligraphy.
The most probable reading is 「鳳雲圖」 (Fèng yún tú), meaning “Painting of the Phoenix and the Clouds.”
Some specialists, however, have suggested that due to the stylization of the characters, it might also be read as 「麗靈圖」 (Lì líng tú), “Painting of the Beautiful Spirit.”
This interpretive duality is common in seal-style calligraphy, where the expressive and spiritual meaning of the brushwork often transcends literal reading.
The work bears the artist’s signature in Chinese (趙春翔) and in Latin script (“Chao Chung-Hsiang”), accompanied by a handwritten dedication.
