Product description
Born in the workshops of Vallauris, the French capital of ceramics, this sweet jar is the heir to a tradition several centuries old. A pottery town since Roman times, Vallauris has seen generations of artisans develop unique craftsmanship, passed down from century to century thanks to the abundance of quality clay in the surrounding hills. After the Second World War, the town became a true artistic laboratory. The arrival of Pablo Picasso in 1948 definitively transformed its reputation. Fascinated by working with clay, Picasso created several thousand ceramic works there and attracted artists and collectors from around the world in his wake. In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Vallauris became synonymous with decorative modernity. The workshops produced pieces with bold shapes and spectacular glazes designed to complement the new interiors of the era. This sweet jar is typical of that period. Its incandescent red, cream, and brown drips evoke the so-called "flambé" or "volcanic" glazes that marked Vallauris' decorative production during "The Glorious Thirty." The squat, gadrooned body, made of glazed stoneware, is topped with a lustrous brown glazed ceramic lid featuring a red and granular ocher medallion. The interior is glossy brown glazed. Diameter approximately 14-16 cm, height closed approximately 10-12 cm. VALLAURIS mark impressed under the base. With its flamboyant red drips and its brown and ivory shades reminiscent of molten rock, this piece seems to capture the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and the creative energy that brought renown to the workshops of the South. More than just a decorative object, it is a testament to an era when French ceramics experienced one of its most beautiful golden ages. Very good condition, intact glaze.
