Product description
Iconic figure of ancient Greek architecture, the caryatid here takes the form of an elegant decorative statuette made during the second half of the 20th century. The young woman is depicted standing, dressed in a long drapery with deeply sculpted folds. Her hair, arranged in long strands falling down her back, supports a sculpted capital that directly recalls the architectural function of ancient caryatids: these female figures replaced the traditional column to support an entablature. The model is inspired by the famous caryatids of the Erechtheion, a temple built on the Acropolis of Athens in the 5th century BCE, whose Porch of the Korai remains one of the most recognizable images of classical Greek architecture. Made from reconstituted alabaster or molded mineral composite, this statuette bears the inscription « KARYATIS » on its base, as well as the letters « GR ». The piece features a beautiful ivory patina and remains in good overall condition, with some small chips, rubbing, and surface irregularities visible in the photographs, particularly around the base. An early decorative interpretation of a major model of Greek statuary, characteristic of the renewed taste for Antiquity in 1960s and 1970s interiors. Height approximately 25 cm.
