Aldo Londi & Bitossi Rimini Blu – A Colorful Legacy in Ceramics
Aldo Londi (1911–2003) was a visionary Italian ceramist whose work helped shape the landscape of 20th-century ceramics. Born in Montelupo Fiorentino, Italy, Londi’s journey in ceramics began early—by the age of 11, he was already apprenticing at a local ceramic factory. His creative path was interrupted by World War II, during which he spent five years as a prisoner of war in South Africa. Remarkably, this time deepened his artistic abilities through painting and sculpture.
After the war, Londi returned to Italy and became the artistic director of Bitossi Ceramiche in 1946. Over three decades, he transformed the company’s identity, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern, experimental design. His style drew on historical motifs and rustic art, but always with a fresh, contemporary twist.
Londi’s most iconic creation is the “Rimini Blu” collection, introduced in 1959. These striking pieces are immediately recognizable for their vibrant turquoise-blue glaze and intricate, abstract geometric patterns. The textures and minute carvings on each piece create a tactile, light-catching surface that evokes the shimmering sea. The collection was named after the seaside town of Rimini, reflecting a mid-century Italian lifestyle admired around the world.
Today, Rimini Blu is celebrated globally and remains in production, a testament to Londi’s timeless design and artistic innovation. His legacy lives on in homes, galleries, and collections, forever capturing the spirit of Italian creativity in rich, ceramic blue.
