Product description
Cado modular shelving designed by Poul Cadovius, a Danish wall system from the 1970s. Teak-veneered components hang from four solid wood uprights, combining open shelves with an enclosed cabinet. This is furniture that changed how domestic space is organised — instead of standing on the floor, it floats on the wall, freeing the area beneath.
The construction relies on vertical wall-mounted rails that form the skeleton of the entire system. Ten shelves of varying depths and a cabinet with woven doors hang from these uprights. The cabinet fronts create a regular lattice pattern that breaks up the smooth veneer surfaces and adds visual interest to the composition. Every element can be adjusted to different heights, and the modular design allows the arrangement to change according to need — the current configuration is just one of many possibilities.
Poul Cadovius pioneered the entire category of wall-mounted furniture with his Royal System in 1948. He developed the concept over subsequent decades, creating the Cado system that became one of Danish design's defining exports. It addressed the reality of shrinking living spaces — rather than heavy furniture occupying floor area, he proposed lightweight structures growing upward. His solutions influenced designers throughout Scandinavia and far beyond.
The shelving accommodates books, art albums, ceramics and everyday items. The depth of most shelves suits standard formats, while the cabinet at thirty-seven centimetres deep conceals larger objects or documents. A width of nearly two and a half metres allows an entire wall to be organised, and the option to expand means the system can grow alongside any collection.
The unit is in good condition. Minor scratches and small chips are visible, natural traces of use from the 1970s. Small losses have been filled. The more noticeable traces of use are also documented in the photographs, so that the actual state of preservation is conveyed as faithfully as possible.
