Product description
This expressive bull sculpture made of German art ceramics impresses with its powerful, naturalistic design and exceptionally plastic elaboration. The massive body, the lowered head, and the strikingly structured mane give the animal an impressive presence. The dark glaze emphasizes the lively surface structure and, in its effect, resembles patinated bronze.
The ceramic is in perfect condition. The glaze is excellently preserved, and the sculpture shows no recognizable damage or defects. With a length of 35 cm and a height of 21 cm, it has a considerable size and a particularly decorative effect.
On the base, there is the embossed mark EJM in a circle, which is associated with the art ceramic production of Edgar Mertens or Martens in Ilmenau. The manufacturer is particularly known for its high-quality ceramic animal sculptures, whose plastic modeling and dark glazes often resemble classical bronze sculptures.
Stylistically, the work can be attributed to German animal sculpture of the early 20th century, presumably the 1920s to 1930s. Comparable animal sculptures marked with EJM are attributed, among others, to the sculptor Karl Kemedinger (1897–1964). Kemedinger intensively dealt with the depiction of animals and understood how to transfer their anatomy, movement, and characteristic expressiveness into plastic forms. However, a definitive attribution of the present bison to Kemedinger is not yet possible.
Particularly appealing is the interplay of naturalistic detail and monumental formal language. Despite its compact dimensions, the bison conveys remarkable strength and dynamism. The dark, bronze-colored glaze enhances the sculptural character and makes the figure an expressive example of historical German art ceramics.
An authentic collector's item with original EJM mark, convincing both as a standalone sculpture and within a collection of historical animal sculptures.
