Description of the Painting
In this cityscape, the viewer looks straight up between tall buildings. The architecture does not stand quietly side by side, but leans from all sides towards the center of the canvas. This creates a powerful perspective and almost the feeling of standing in the middle of the street oneself, surrounded by the city.
The buildings are painted in warm red, brown, orange, and blue tones. The many small windows reinforce the rhythm and repetition of the city. The brushstrokes remain visible and loose, preventing the buildings from becoming static; instead, they appear to move and draw inward.
In the center of the composition is a bright, yellow-white opening. This open sky forms a strong contrast with the dense buildings surrounding it. Precisely this empty space thereby becomes almost the most important element of the work: a place of light, breath, and freedom amidst all the structures.
The unusual frog's-eye perspective makes the viewer appear small relative to the architecture. At the same time, everything points towards the open center. This creates an interesting tension between being enclosed and experiencing space, between busyness and silence, between what surrounds us and what we can look up at. For me, therefore, this work is not only about buildings, but about finding space within a world that constantly moves around you.
