Product description
Brutalist ceramic fish sculpture – Emiel (Emmanuel) Laskaris (1960s/1970s) – Signed
Special and rare Mid-Century Modern Decorative Object by the renowned Greek-Belgian ceramist Emmanuel "Emiel" Laskaris (1920-1995), active in Sint-Niklaas. While Laskaris is primarily known for his figurative children's and women's sculptures, this stylized fish sculpture is a unique, atypical, and therefore highly sought-after find within his oeuvre.
The sculpture is entirely handcrafted from coarse, characterful stoneware (earthenware) with a beautiful rough texture in earthy tones. The bodies of the two stacked fish are decorated with his characteristic, deeply impressed circular stamps and striking eyes, giving the object a powerful brutalist appearance.
On the underside, the sculpture features the original, hand-scratched initials "E.L.", guaranteeing the authenticity of this unique piece of studio ceramics.
Features:
• Artist: Emmanuel (Emiel) Laskaris (1920-1995)
• Period: 1960s / 1970s (Mid-Century Modern / Brutalism)
• Material: Unglazed / matte stoneware (studio ceramics)
• Signature: Hand-signed "E.L." on the underside
. Dimensions: 22 cm h x 19 cm w x 7 cm
