This bronze sculpture depicts Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, captured at the moment of enlightenment. The figure is presented in the earth-witness tradition, a canonical posture known as the Bhumisparsha mudra, which signifies the calling upon the earth to bear witness to his awakening. Traditionally hollow-cast in bronze, the piece features a distinctive and richly decorated pedestal. The base is adorned with elephants and a central figure, a narrative symbolism that points towards a North Indian or Nepalese Buddhist temple tradition. The sculpture measures 37.6 centimetres in height and 24 centimetres in width, presenting a compact modelling and balanced proportions that give the piece a calm and powerful presence.
