Description of the painting
This painting depicts a serene city view in an almost monochrome palette of white, ice blue, grey, and deep anthracite. On either side, tall, abstractly painted buildings rise up. They are not rendered as concrete architecture, but constructed from vertical brushstrokes and layered planes, causing them to appear more as an impression or memory of a city than as a literal representation.
In the center, a broad, light band runs towards the horizon. This can be interpreted as a street, a quay, or a still water surface. Due to the strong perspective, the gaze is naturally drawn backward, towards a narrow dark line reminiscent of a bridge, railing, or transition point. Behind that point, a bright, almost radiant space of white light opens up.
It is precisely this contrast between the dark, closed city walls and the light center that gives the work its power. The city here does not appear noisy or busy, but rather quiet and almost deserted. There is not a person to be seen, no traffic, no movement except that of the brushstroke itself. As a result, the painting takes on a meditative atmosphere: as if the city pauses for a moment, or as if the viewer finds themselves in a moment of stillness among the buildings.
The paint treatment reinforces that feeling. The vertical stripes at the top evoke rain, mist, or falling light, while the thicker paint textures on the sides give the buildings a rough, almost icy skin. At the bottom, lighter, horizontal, and sweeping brushstrokes provide reflection and depth.
For me, this work is about space in the city — not the hustle and bustle, but rather the emptiness, the silence, and the light that creates an opening between hard forms. The painting can be read as an image of distance, stillness, and hope: a path forward, between cool walls, towards openness.
