Product description
This Breton faience vase captivates with the vividness of its decoration and its generous form. Its ample and well-balanced, pear-shaped body rises on a foot encircled by a bright yellow band, while the flared neck is highlighted by a speckled blue rim, characteristic of popular wares from the Quimper region. On the main side, a male figure in traditional Breton costume occupies the center of the composition. He wears a blue jacket, burgundy puffed breeches, a black wide-brimmed hat, and black shoes. The artist has carefully and imaginatively rendered the details of the costume, framed by two stylized green foliage motifs with generous forms. On the reverse side, a burgundy and green floral motif lightly extends the decoration. Breton faience, in the Quimper tradition, developed from the 17th century, driven by manufacturers like HB Quimper and Henriot, who made the depiction of the Breton peasant in traditional costume their most recognizable signature. This artisanal and semi-industrial production reached its peak in the 20th century, spreading throughout France and abroad the image of a Brittany proud of its traditions. This piece, created in the 1950s-1970s, is part of this rich tradition. Unmarked, it attests to careful regional production, faithful to the aesthetic codes of Breton faience.
